Pharmacy Public-Private Partnership - Collection of Home Generated non-Controlled Pharmaceuticals
Home generated pharmaceutical waste can be effectively managed if pharmacies and public agencies work together. Curbside Inc. has he experience in bringing pharmacy owners and public officials together to form a partnership that can begin the process of removing potentially harmful waste pharmaceuticals from homes.
The concept is simple. A pharmacy agrees to accept unwanted or unneeded non-controlled pharmaceuticals from the public. Curbside installs a drop-box for use by the public to dispose of their waste pharmaceuticals. The city advertises the program as their effort to assist the public.
The pharmacy pays Curbside to place the drop-box and remove the waste. The waste is destroyed on site and shipped for incineration. What does the pharmacy get from the partnership? Residents of the community will stop by and drop off their waste pharmaceuticals. Many of those participating will not have come to the pharmacy in the past. This is a an excellent opportunity for the pharmacy to acquire new customers. The new business will potentially offset the cost of the program.
The city, county or other public agency where the pharmacy is located offers a program to the public with zero cost to the public treasury. The public education efforts on the part of the public agency are in the normal course of business. Advertising this program will send the public to the pharmacy where not only will potentially hazardous waste be destroyed but the pharmacy sells more products, sales and other taxes are greater and everyone benefits.
The collection of sharps can be added as well. In California, the Orange County Pharmacists Association program utilizes Curbside's services to implement its public-private partnership. Click on the link above to find the OCPhA Program description.
